Research & Thesis
MMus (cum laude) — Marcelle Volckaert's research on Pilates warm-up for classical singers at Stellenbosch University.
Breathe in for nothing
An interpretative phenomenological analysis exploring the influence of a Pilates warm-up in singers
MMus, Stellenbosch University — awarded cum laude, 2019.
This thesis examined how the Pilates method can be of benefit to singers in particular, and musicians more generally. Grounded in interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA), it explored the lived experience of classical singers who used a Pilates-based warm-up as part of their preparation to sing.
The research initiated an ongoing interest in the use of the Pilates method’s benefits for singers and musicians. It informs how I teach today — particularly in the Pilates for Singers and Pilates for Musicians workshops I run for individuals and institutions such as the Marvão International Academy of Music, Art and Science.

An overview of the thesis has been published in the Post-ip journal:
Working with musicians and singers
For singers dealing with remedial issues such as vocal tension dysphonia or stage fright, I provide private tuition combining Pilates with vocal exercises to help you sing at your best again.
Specially designed Pilates programmes take the musician and the impact of the instrument or voice on the body into account. Performance and rehearsal strain take their toll — so lessons are designed to prepare both body and mind for making music and performing.
Goals for singers
- Enhance singing technique by strengthening and stretching the complementary muscles
- Improve overall physical wellbeing by addressing muscular imbalances
- Facilitate performance by creating and enhancing freedom of movement
- Increase physical and mental relaxation prior to vocalising
Broader benefits
- Improved joint flexibility and strength
- Posture stabilisation
- Reduction of pain and headaches
- Positive body image
- Foundation for mind/body communication
