Pilates for Singers
Pilates method benefits for classical singers and musicians.
Specially designed Pilates programmes that prepare both body and mind for making music and performance.
My work with singers grows out of my Master’s research, Breathe in for nothing — an exploration of how a Pilates-based warm-up influences singers. It has been used both by individuals solving technical issues in a new way and by music institutions and conservatoires.
Programmes take the musician — and the impact of the instrument or voice on the body — into account. Performance and rehearsal strain take their toll, so lessons are designed to ready both body and mind to make music at your best.
For singers with issues such as muscle tension dysphonia or stage fright, I offer private tuition combining Pilates with vocal exercises — working alongside, not in place of, your ENT or voice therapist.
- Enhance singing technique by strengthening and stretching the complementary muscles
- Improve overall physical well-being by addressing muscular imbalances
- Facilitate performance by creating and enhancing freedom of movement
- Increase physical and mental relaxation prior to vocalising
- Improved joint flexibility and strength
- Posture stabilisation
- Reduction of pain and headaches
- Positive body image
- A foundation for mind-body communication
The research behind this work is documented here, with an overview in the Post-ip journal.
Thank you for your inspiring work with us!
My voice and my heart are doing FANTASTIC.
Tell me your instrument and the tension patterns you’re working with, and we’ll design a programme around them.
